The foundation of the church was laid by Irish Catholics of the British Army in 1840, after the division of the Madras Archdiocese. It took 10 years for the church to be completed, and it was the largest church in the Hyderabad state when it opened.
The church is built in the Indian Gothic style, similar to contemporary churches in the area, with architectural features including buttresses, spires, and pointed arches. The church ceased to be a cathedral in 1886 when the Archdiocese shifted from Secunderabad to Hyderabad. In 1901, four bells were imported from Italy and fitted to the towers.
