Description
This Church was commissioned in 1818, one of the first in Secunderabad. The church was originally built for British troops of the Secunderabad Cantonment, and has a capacity of 500 devotees. The St. John’s church is in a cruciform built in the Tuscan style. Inside, the altar is to the east. On its left is the almost 16-feet tall pipe organ, one of the very few working church organs of its kind in the Indian subcontinent. A circular stained glass window, depicting St. John the Baptist, is fixed high above the altar.
The belfry was commissioned by the industrialist Dewan Bahadur Seth Lachmi Narayan Ramgopal. Numerous plaques can be found inside the church, erected in the memory of British officers stationed at Secunderabad.
Existing Condition
The church is in constant use and the facade has been repainted.
