Shah Ali Banda
Clock Tower

Location

The clock tower stands south of Charminar, on the Shah

Ali Banda Road.

Description

The clock tower, also known as the Raja Rai Raiyan Ghadiyal, was built in 1904. It is the only remaining part of a magnificent deodi that belonged to Raja Rai Raiyan, the daftardar (revenue officer) in the court of Nizam III Sikandar Jah from 1795-97. The clock tower combines European styles with hints of local architecture. A Ganesha emblem can be seen at the crown of the entrance arch. Floral and vegetative patterns in lime stucco adorn the clock level. The dome on top rests on columns bridged with semicircular arches.

Existing Condition

The tower is now encroached on both sides by unplanned residential development. The structure was damaged over time by natural causes as well as human intervention.
