Description
Sri Ranganathaswamy Temple is a 400 year old temple dedicated to Lord Ranganatha, a form of the Lord Vishnu .
Kalyana Vanamamalai Ramanuja Jeeyar, the head of the Vaishnavite Nanganur Prathama Peetham, stayed here, the area was named Jeeyarguda after him, which is now also known as Jiyaguda.
The temple is built within a complex of two and a half acres, located on the banks of the Musi river. The Dravidian style temple has a three-tiered rajagopuram (main temple tower). The central shrine houses a stone image of Ranganatha, reclining on a snake bed. The complex also contains shrines for Lakshmi (worshipped as Ranganayaki) and Andal, apart from Hanuman and Garuda. The dwajasthambam lies behind Garuda’s shrine and is made of panchaloha (a metal alloy). On the sanctum, images of Vishnu’s Dashavatara can be seen.
Existing Condition
The temple is owned by the Endowment Department and has had many modern alterations, including construction of a new Mandapam.
