Fateh Maidan Clock Tower

Location

The clock tower stands within the LB stadium sports complex in the vicinity of Naubat Pahad.

Description

The Fateh Maidan Clock Tower was built in 1903 to commemorate Nizam VI Mahboob Ali Khan’s silver jubilee. The tower stands in the maidan, where the Alamgir camped after his victory over Deccan. Today, a sports complex has been constructed in the same location, which is also known as the Lal Bahadur Stadium or Victory Ground. Nawab Zafar Yar Jung Bahadur built the tower in the Fateh Maidan Club, near the Bagh-i-Aam.

The city’s nobility and aristocrats took it upon themselves to build clock towers in various locations, and the Fateh Maidan Clock Tower is one of those prime locations, surrounded by the Nampally Railway Station, the mansions of the nobility at Khairatabad, Naubat Pahad, and the Hyderabad Mint. While only the nobility had access to the gentlemen’s club, the clock tower served everyone in the city. The tower features Gothic arches and a spire on top, with clock faces on all four sides. A reflecting pool of water was built to the south of the tower.
