Dewan Deori Gate

Location

The gate is located on the road leading from Naya Pul to Charminar opposite the Madina Building.

Description

Built in the period of Dewan Mir Alam, the Prime Minister of Nizam III Sikander Jah, the Dewan Deori complex spanned from the banks of the Musu to the Mir Alam Mandi. Only the gate remains of what used to be one of the entrances to the Salar Jung estate, also known as the Dewan Deori. The Dewan Deori was an enormous estate with palaces, guesthouses, gardens and pavilions overlooking the Musi river where the Salar Jung Museum stands today. After the demise of Salar Jung III Turab Ali Khan, the Dewan Deori estate was split among several heirs and sold their parts of the estate and palaces. The Dewan Deori gate now stands in a mere shadow of its past glory, opposite the Madina building. This gate once served as the entrance to the Salar Jung Museum until the 1960s, when the new building was constructed on the banks of the river. The gateway is comprised of a semi-circular Roman arch which is flanked by two-storied octagonal rooms on either sides. The windows on the first story have a combination of pointed and segmental pediments.

Existing Condition

The gateway now houses several shops and serves as an entrance to a major commercial market area.
