Description
Monda Market is a local market that is said to have been established more than 100 years ago to cater to the British army units staying in the Secunderabad Cantonment.
It was one of the largest wholesale and retail markets in Hyderabad, with about 375 businesses running in the vegetable, fruit and meat markets that are segregated. The entrance to the Monda Market is characterized by a clock tower, designed in the Art Deco style.
The area also includes a jail, built by the British army. The structure known as ‘Jail Khana’ is now used for shops, covering over 4,400 square yards in the busy market area.
Existing Condition
In 1998, there was a proposal to shift the market to Bowenpally, Secunderabad, but only the wholesale traders were shifted.
The historic market structure shows signs of water damage and the jail structure shows structural damage and loss of features on the main elevation. There is insufficient parking for the customers and waterlogging occurs in the monsoon season on the market roads.
