Kos Minar

Location

Located on the Kulsumpura crossroads on the Golconda – Machilipatnam highway, the Kos Minar is located in a bylane of Kulsumpura next to the Jama Masjid Kulsumpura opposite to the post office.

Description

Built during the reign of Ibrahim Quli Qutb Shah, the Kos Minar at Kulsumpura is a cylindrical structure, topped with a dome, made of granite that stands at a height of approximately 15 feet. These milestones were used to mark the distance between towns and cities, as well as to provide travelers with information about the distance they had covered and the distance remaining to their destination.

The Kulsumpura Kos Minar is the only remaining Kos Minar in Karwan between Golconda and then-new town of Hyderabad and is equidistant to the Fateh Darwaza in Golconda and to the Charminar.

Existing Condition

The masonry at the base of the Kos Minar has traces of original lime mortar pointing, and the plastered dome surface has been covered with modern materials. There are multiple modern constructions in its immediate vicinity.
