Description
Warangal Durries are a type of multi-colored durries made from cotton and woven using the weft interlocked technique. The city of Warangal has become famous for these durries over time due to the availability of cotton and the presence of spinning mills like Azam Jahi Mills. The art of weaving has been passed down through generations of skilled weavers who have inherited the profession. The availability of these skilled weavers has contributed significantly to the growth of the cotton durrie industry in Warangal.
Over the years, the weavers in Warangal have adapted to new techniques and started implementing ikat techniques of patterning yarn and kalamkari prints in their work. The characteristic designs of Warangal durries are geometric, with angular motifs used in tapestry weave structures, colored horizontal stripes used in jamkhans and shatranjis (cotton carpets), and the mihrab motif in the jainamaaz (prayer mat).
The fine work produced by Warangal weavers has made its way abroad, and a specimen of this work dating back to the 18th or 19th century is available at the South Kensington Museum. The skill of the Warangal weavers is visible in their specific designs, which are authentic to the region.
