Description
Pembarthi metal craft is a highly esteemed and ancient craft from India, with a rich history dating back more than 5000 years. Pembarthi village, in particular, has been home to skilled metal workers called Vishwakarmas who have been producing exquisite metal crafts for centuries. These metal crafts are usually made of pure brass, and for certain decorative items, silver coating is applied to the brass ware. The range of goods produced is extensive and includes intricate brassware, temple pooja and utility items, temple utsavas, vigaras, household items and containers, decorative items, wall hangings, and panels.
What makes Pembarthi Metal Craft unique is the fact that it is carved by hand on ten-gauge metal sheets, and no machine or dye is used in its making. The process is highly labor-intensive and requires great expertise. Drawing a sketch on paper and then embossing it on a brass metal sheet fixed on lakka is a skill that is mastered by the artisans over years of practice.
The art of Pembarthi Metal Craft is a testament to the skill and creativity of the Vishwakarmas and their long-standing legacy. Today, Pembarthi Metal Craft has received recognition as a Geographical Indication (GI) product, making it a part of the rich cultural heritage of India. The GI application number for Pembarthi Metal Crafts is 194.
