Description
Narayanpet Sarees have a long and fascinating history dating back to around 1630 AD. It all started when Chattrapati Shivaji was traveling through the Narayanpet region and left behind a few weavers after camping there for a few days. These weavers started weaving a unique type of saree which over time became incredibly popular, and the sarees came to be called Narayanpet Sarees. The knowledge of weaving them has been passed down from one generation to the next, making it a traditional skill that continues to thrive today.
The sarees come in three main materials: pure cotton, pure silk, or a mixture of silk and cotton. They are adorned with thread and zari work, and the zari border is always in the form of a bold ribbon as a border and in pallu. There is a compulsory border on both sides of the saree, giving it a unique and distinct look. One of the factors that make Narayanpet Sarees so special is the quality of the water in the Narayanpet region, which contributes to the quality of color in the sarees.
The Narayanpet Cotton Sarees are particularly unique because of the weaving of checks throughout the body of the saree and compulsory borders on both sides. They stand out from other cotton sarees due to their intricate designs and patterns, which require great skill to weave. On the other hand, the Narayanpet Silk Sarees are unique because of the compulsory weaving of a temple border and a ‘theni pallu’ with arrow-like ends. Weaving the ‘theni pallu’ requires great skill and experience and is considered a hallmark of the Narayanpet Silk Saree.
The Narayanpet Saree is not just a garment but a testament to the human skill and craftsmanship that goes into creating each one. Weaving Narayanpet Sarees requires great skill, especially in weaving the checks in cotton sarees. It takes years of experience and training to perfect the art of weaving these sarees. However, the end result is a stunning and unique piece of clothing that is not only beautiful but also has a rich history and cultural significance.
