Medak Fort

Location

The Medak fort is located in the city of Medak. It is 95km  from Hyderabad.

Description

About 800 years ago, Medak saw the construction of its fort, which once served as the district’s administrative center. Built in the 12th century during the reign of Kakatiya ruler Pratapa Rudra, it was originally known as ‘Methuku Durgam’ in Telugu. It functioned as a key command center for both the Kakatiyas and later the Qutub Shahis. The Qutub Shahis added a 17th-century Mosque to the fort premises along with granaries.

Perched at a height of around 90 meters and sprawling across 100 acres in a hilly area, the Medak Fort demands a climb of 500 steps to reach its top. It boasts three main entrances: the “Prathama Dwaram,” the “Simha Dwaram” featuring two snarling lions, and the “Gaja Dwaram,” adorned with an impressive sculpture of interlocked elephants.

The central gateway proudly displays the emblem of the Vijayanagara Empire, the double-headed “Gandabherundam,” attributed to the legendary ruler Srikrishna Devaraya. Within the fort’s confines, a 17th-century cannon, intricately etched with a trident, measuring 3.2 meters, is on display.

Leveraging the natural rocky terrain for defense, the ancient Medak Fort also encompasses a small lake, barracks, and a warehouse, enhancing its historical significance and architectural charm.
