Built in 1871, the Kollapur Fort belonged to the Kollapur Samasthanam, which was a princely region under the Nizams ruled by Hindu rulers. Most of the Nallamala region along the Krishna River was under the control of Kollapur.
The Kollapur palace complex is a magnificent structure with several buildings. The main palace structure has a large doorway with wooden doors. The complex contains a large open area, in front of the palace, now used as an administrative building. Towards the west, lies the main residential complex of the Kollapur rulers, with structures constructed in the 19th and 20th centuries, with historic horse carts on display.
