Viqar Ul Umra

Prime Minister of Hyderabad

Nawab Muhammad Fazaluddin Khan, Sikander Jung, Ekbal-ud-Daula, Aktaidar-ul-Mulk, Sir Viqar-ul-Umara Bahadur, K.C.I.E., was born in Hyderabad in 1856. He was the grandson of the third Nizam and the younger son of Nawab Rasheeduddin Khan Bahadur, Amir-e-Kabir Ill. When Afzal-ud-Daula passed away, he became the guardian of Mir Mahboob Ali Khan, Nizam VI, who was then a minor. Sir Viqar-ul-Umara was appointed as the Prime Minister in 1894, succeeding Sir Asman Jah. He held the position for six years until 1900.


During his tenure, he implemented a number of reforms, with education receiving special attention. He established the Asafia Library and several schools, and was always willing to allocate funds for educational purposes. Sir Viqar-ul-Umara had an artistic taste and was known for his beautiful palace construction projects. The famous Falaknuma Palace was one of his achievements. In 1901, he died suddenly due to heart failure while out hunting in Balkonda, one of his estates. He was buried in his family cemetery with full military honors. He left two sons, Nawab Sultan-ul-Mulk and Nawab Wali-ud-Daula. Viqarabad was named after Viqar-ul-Umara.
