SM Arif, hailing from Hyderabad, is a highly accomplished figure in the field of badminton. He served as the former Chief National Coach for badminton and received notable accolades such as the Dronacharya Award in 2000 and the Padma Shri Award in 2012. Born in 1944, he completed his B.Sc from the University of Hyderabad.

While initially involved in cricket, Arif transitioned to badminton and showcased his skills during his college days. He captained Anwar ul Uloom College for four years in cricket and played for Deccan Blues in the HCA league. However, his passion for badminton grew, and he represented the University of Hyderabad in the inter-varsity badminton championship, securing victory. Arif also represented Andhra Pradesh in various national tournaments.

In 1974, Arif obtained a diploma in badminton coaching from the prestigious National Institute of Sports in Patiala. This qualification paved the way for his involvement as a coach, and in 1997, he was appointed as the National Chief Badminton Coach. Throughout his coaching career, Arif mentored several prominent Indian badminton players, including Pullela Gopichand, the former All England Badminton Champion, as well as P. V. V. Lakshmi, Jwala Gutta, and Saina Nehwal, all of whom held the title of Indian National Badminton Champions.

SM Arif’s contributions to the sport, both as a player and a coach, have left a lasting impact on Indian badminton. His expertise and guidance have played a vital role in shaping the careers of numerous talented players.
