Kaloji Narayana Rao, popularly known as Praja Kavi Kalanna, was a renowned Telugu poet, freedom fighter, and social activist from Telangana. Born on September 9, 1914, his poetry was known for its powerful expressions and passionate portrayal of social issues. He was awarded the Padma Vibhushan in 1992. The Telangana government declared Sri.Kaloji’s birthday as Telangana Language Day
He completed his formal education in Warangal and Hyderabad. He was one of the first modern Telugu poets to write free verse and also wrote poetry in Marathi, Kannada, Hindi and Urdu.
Kaloji’s poetry titled “Na Godava” (consisting of ten volumes) is a running commentary on his time’s historical, socio-political and cultural aspects. It reflects his deep empathy for the common man’s struggles and his unwavering commitment to social justice.
His other notable literary works include ‘Kaloji Kathalu’, ‘Vijayam Thudi Manadi Jayam’, ‘Vyavam Parthiva’ and ‘Telangana Udyama Kavithalu’, and translations, entitled “Na Bharata Desha Yatra ‘ and ‘ Jeevana Gita ‘. He also translated many literary works from other languages into Telugu. His poetry continues to inspire and resonate with people, highlighting the importance of raising one’s voice against injustice and inequality. Kaloji Narayana Rao’s contributions to literature and social activism have left an indelible mark on the cultural and political landscape of Telangana.
