Bilkees Latif

Description

Bilkees Idrees Latīf was a notable Indian social worker and writer, renowned for her efforts in improving the lives of those residing in the slums of Mumbai and Hyderabad. Born in Hyderabad in 1930, she was the daughter of Ali Yavar Jung, (who served as an Indian Ambassador to many countries and was a recipient of the Padma Vibhusan). She played a crucial role as a founding member of INTACH. She was the president of the National Society for Clean Cities and was associated with Population First, a Mumbai-based NGO, which works on population and health issues within the framework of women’s rights and social development. In recognition of her outstanding contributions to society, the Government of India bestowed upon her the prestigious Padma Shri, the fourth-highest civilian honor, in 2009. Latīf has authored numerous articles and books. The Essential Andhra Cookbook, Fragrance of Forgotten Years, and The Ladder of His Life: Biography of Air Chief Marshal Idris Latif are some of her popular books.
