M.L. Jaisimha

Cricketer

Jaisimha, a right-handed batsman, left an enduring impact on the Indian cricket team during his impressive 12-year tenure. Born in Secunderabad in 1939, he possessed versatile skills, excelling not only with the bat but also as a medium-paced bowler and a brilliant fielder.

Renowned for his elegant batting style, Jaisimha’s exquisite wrist-work was a sight to behold. He showcased his versatility by playing both as an opener and occasionally slotting into the middle order.

Jaisimha made his mark early, debuting in first-class cricket at the tender age of 15 during the 1954-55 Ranji Trophy. Displaying his prowess, he scored a remarkable 90 runs for Hyderabad against Andhra Pradesh while also taking three wickets for 51 runs.

His Test debut came against England at Lord’s in 1959, when he was just 20 years old. Notably, he holds the distinction of being the first batsman to bat on all five days of a Test match during the 1959-60 fixture in Calcutta. He achieved his maiden Test century against England in Delhi in 1961, followed by an impressive 129 runs against the same opponent in Kolkata in 1964, which remained his highest Test score. Fans from that era fondly recall his composed strokeplay. In 1964-65, he registered 134 runs against Ceylon, and one of the highlights of his career came in 1968 when he compiled exceptional knocks of 74 and 101 at the Gabba.

Despite his undeniable talent, inconsistent form plagued Jaisimha, and his cricketing journey concluded during the West Indies tour in 1971.

It’s worth noting that Jaisimha captained the Indian captain Mansur Ali Khan Pataudi during their time together at Hyderabad.

Following his retirement from playing, Jaisimha served as a selector from 1977-78 to 1980-81 and managed the Indian tour to Sri Lanka in 1985-86. He received the honor of being made a life member of MCC in 1978 and also ventured into TV commentary for a period.

Sadly, Jaisimha passed away at the age of 60 in 1999, leaving behind a rich cricketing legacy.
