Khilla Ghanpur

Location

At a distance of 2 km from Khilla Ghanpur Bus Stand, 25 km from Mahabubnagar and 109 km from Hyderabad, Khilla Ghanpur Fort is located near Khilla Ghanpur village in the Mahabubnagar district of Telangana.

Description

The Ghanpur Fort is a hill fort built on a rocky hill by King Gona Ganapa Reddy in early 13th century. He ruled this area as a feudatory to Kakatiya rulers. Gona Ganapa Reddy was the son of Gona Budda Reddy (the poet of Ranganatha Ramayana, a pioneering Telugu Literature.) The name of Ghanapuram Killa came into existence from the name of Kakatiya Ruler Sri Ganapathi Deva. 

 

The fort is spread over a hilly site of 4 square kilometers area, and there are buildings spread across the top most part of the hill. The fort contained canons on the upper walls of the fort.

 

There are several temples within the fort precinct, including the Veerabhadra Temple, Narsimh Temple and Chowdeswari Temple. 

 

There are several caves on the hill, as well as two freshwater ponds, and the site provides a site for tourists as there are various activities such as swimming and trekking in and around the site.

 

Existing Condition

The fort structures are in a dilapidated state, there is no signage or facilities for tourists.
