Kotilingala

Location

Kotilingala lies at about 60kms from Karimnagar town on Karimnagar-Nagpur National highway in the Karimnagar district. The site is located near the confluence of the river Godavari and Peddavagu.

Description

Kotilingala is said to be one of the 30 walled towns of Andhra mentioned by Megasthenes – a Greek Ambassador who visited the sub-continent in 3rd Century BC.

 

 

Structures excavated here included the fortified mud wall surrounding the site, brick bastions, and other religious and secular structures. 

 

Artefacts excavated include coins of Andhra kings namely Rano Samagopa, Rano Narana, Rano Kanvaya Siri and Srimukha-the founder of the Satavahana dynasty, Brahmi label inscriptions, gold beads, shell and glass bangles, semi precious and terracotta beads and pottery.

Existing Condition

The excavated artefacts of the site are located at the Centenary Heritage Museum, Hyderabad.
