Yeleswaram

Location

Yeleswaram is one of the villages, submerged by the construction of the Nagarjuna Sagar reservoir, located on the left bank of the river Krishna in the Nalgonda district.

Description

The excavations at the site revealed religious and secular structures, including a bathing ghat with a flight of stone steps leading to the river Krishna. The site was enclosed by a mud fortification wall. 

 

Artefacts excavated at the site include early historic pottery, terracotta human and animal figurines, iron implements, clay moulds, Roman, Satavahana, lkshavaku and Vishnukundin coins, Brahmi label inscriptions etc. The findings suggest that the site dates back to the 1st Century AD to 3rd Century AD.

Existing Condition

The village was submerged during the construction of  the Nagarjuna Sagar reservoir. The excavated artefacts of the site are located in Centenary Heritage Museum, Hyderabad.
