Description
The Pocharam Project stands as a reservoir and wildlife sanctuary located in the Medak district of Telangana. Its construction, spanning from 1916 to 1922, saw the creation of a dam over the Allair, a tributary of the Manjeera River. This sanctuary spans a vast area, covering around 130 square kilometers.
With a substantial capacity of 2.423 tmc, the project, completed at a cost of Rs 27.11 lakh in 1922, was specifically designed to cater to the water needs of Nagieddipet and Yellareddy mandals in Kamareddy district, as well as Medak mandal in the Medak district. Over the past 95 years, Pocharam has diligently served the irrigation and drinking water requirements of the people in Nizamabad and Medak districts. The construction, undertaken by the Nizam government, utilized limestone, creating a project that stretches 1.7 km in length, featuring a 21 ft high bund across the Manchippa brook. Moreover, it incorporates a network of 58 km long canals and 73 distributaries to efficiently distribute the water resources.
The Nizam’s Bungalow located near the reservoir, stands as a historical structure. The island positioned in the reservoir’s center hosts a diverse array of shrubs and vegetation. Visitors have the option to access the island via boats available near the reservoir. Functioning as a storage point on the Allair River, the reservoir not only attracts travelers but also serves as a delightful picnic destination. Visitors often indulge in fishing activities, thoroughly enjoying the serene surroundings and recreational opportunities offered by the reservoir.
