Description

Kotilingala, situated at the confluence of the Peddavagu and Godavari River, is a historically significant site with a rich heritage. It served as one of the capitals of the Satavahana dynasty. Additionally, Kotilingala was the capital of Assaka Janapada, one of the 16 great janapadas of early India. Janapadas were ancient territorial divisions or kingdoms in India, and the Assaka Janapada held historical importance.

The Sri Koteswara Siddeshwara Swamy Temple, dedicated to Lord Shiva, is a notable religious structure in Kotilingala. This temple was constructed by the Satavahana Kings between the 2nd and 3rd centuries. The presence of this ancient temple signifies the religious and cultural significance of Kotilingala during that period.

The name “Koteshwara Swamy” is associated with the Shiva temple located inside a kota or fort. The prefix “Koti” is often used in the context of Lord Shiva, signifying the worship of a large number of lingas (Shiva’s sacred symbol). Therefore, the name “Koteshwara Swamy” suggests the significance of Lord Shiva’s presence in the fortified area of Kotilingala.
