Mithali Raj, widely regarded as one of the greatest female cricketers of all time, has left an indelible mark on Indian cricket as the former captain of the Indian Women’s cricket team.
Born in Jodhpur, Rajasthan in 1982, Mithali’s cricketing journey commenced at the young age of 10. She made her international debut in 1999 and assumed the captaincy role for the Indian team in 2004. Under her leadership, the team reached the final of the 2005 World Cup and she also captained them during the 2017 World Cup, where they finished as runners-up.
Mithali holds the remarkable record for being the highest run-scorer in women’s international cricket, accumulating over 7,800 runs in ODIs and over 6,000 runs in Tests.
Her exceptional contributions to the sport have garnered prestigious recognition, including the Arjuna Award, the Padma Shri, and the Major Dhyan Chand Khel Ratna, which stand as India’s highest sporting honors. Mithali serves as a role model and inspiration for countless young girls and women worldwide, motivating them to pursue cricket.
In 2022, Mithali Raj announced her retirement from international cricket. She currently channels her wealth of experience and expertise as a mentor and advisor for the Gujarat Giants in the Women’s T20 Challenge, continuing to make significant contributions to the game she holds dear.
