Location
The temple is located on the banks of Bhadrakali lake in Warangal . It is one of the popular temples in the city.
Description
The temple is believed to be built in 625 A.D by the King Pulakeshin II of Chalukya dynasty to commemorate his victory over Vengi region of Andhra Desham, as per the writings on the temple wall. It was later adopted by the Kakatiya Kings and was considered as their kuladevta.
There is lake adjacent to the temple built by Ganapati Deva.
After the fall of Kakatiya dynasty to the Muslim rulers of Delhi the temple lost its prominence. In 1950, the temple was renovated by Sri Ganesh Rao Sastri along with a Gujrati businessman Shri Maganlal.
The history of the Koh-i-Noor diamond which is a part of the British Crown Jewels, is closely associated with this temple as it was installed, as the left eye of Goddess Bhadrakali during the Kakatiya dynasty.
The temple also has mandapam,dhvajasthambam and a bali pitham.
Existing Condition
The Temple is a popular pilgrimage site it is maintained by the Temple’s Trust.
