Major Edward Lawrie

Surgeon

Sergeant Major Edward Lawrie was born in Scotland in 1846. He received his medical education at the Edinburgh Medical School. Dr. Lawrie worked as the British Residency surgeon and Principal of Hyderabad Medical School from 1885 to 1901. He administered chloroform anesthesia to thousands of patients at Afzalgunj hospital in Hyderabad.


He was a personal physician to Nizam VI and wrote a book on chloroform anesthesia, contributing many articles to leading medical journals in England. After Dr. Lawrie’s death in 1915, Nawab Mir Osman Ali Khan, Nizam VII, sanctioned a pension of €600 per annum for his widow for life in appreciation of his services to the Nizam’s family.
